Packshot Photography FAQs

  • A packshot is a still or moving image of a product, usually including its packaging and labelling. They are simple to set up and allow for high volumes to be photographed in a session.

  • Accuracy breeds trust, and this is so important when it comes to packshots. A good packshot provides an accurate presentation of the qualities of the item for the customer, ideally making it look attractive and encouraging, but without feeling like it’s not a clear and accurate representation.

  • Popular across everything from magazines and billboards, to catalogues and e-commerce pages, packshots are still or moving images of a product. Packshots aim to show an accurate representation of the product, sometimes with its packaging and labelling.

  • We can provide photo retouching for removing unwanted marks, cut out, change colour levels, saturation and brand colour matching, we call this Post-Production. Ensuring the image shows the pack in its best light and all images are consistent.

  • All the post-production of a packshot will consist of five stages. First, you cut the product from the background. Second, you choose a desired uniform background, or if you want it to be cut out on a white background. Third, you retouch the surface of the photographed item. Forth, you correct the colour palette of the photo, manipulating saturation, vibrance and contrast. And finally, you decide on the file formats required for your purposes: .png, .tif, .jpg.

  • Yes. Packshots can be optimised for use in e-commerce. Some providers call this creating Hero shots, but we prefer the term optimised, because this more accurately explains the process. Optimising pack shots means we edit the front of pack (FOP) to make the key information more visible and striking, which works better with the small thumbnails used in e-commerce and on mobiles. Information such as branding, flavour, weight, colourway, and allergen information is optimised for better viewability on small screens.
